AGA and Range Cooker Care: Preparing for Winter

An AGA or range cooker doesn't hibernate. As the temperature drops, it becomes the hardest-working appliance in the house — always on, cooking and heating the kitchen through the darkest months. All that constant use means one thing: grease and carbon build up faster in winter.

Why range cookers need special care

• They run hot, constantly. Grease that lands on a hot surface bakes on instantly into carbon that no spray touches.
• Every surface gets used. Roasting ovens, simmering plates, hot lids — a range cooker has more grease-collecting surfaces than any other cooker.
• Built-up carbon insulates. On AGA-style cookers, thick carbon inside the ovens affects heat distribution and makes the cooker work harder for the same results.

What you can do between cleans

1. Wipe daily while warm (never hot). A damp cloth on lids and plates each evening stops fresh grease baking on.
2. Keep the boiling plate conditioned. A thin wipe of oil on the seasoned surface keeps it non-stick.
3. Empty and wipe the ash/oven bases weekly so debris doesn't carbonise.
4. Don't use oven spray on enamel or aluminium — caustic products permanently dull range cooker finishes.

When it needs the professionals

When the enamel has gone amber, the roasting oven walls are black, or the lids no longer wipe clean, it's time for a deep clean. Professional range cooker cleaning includes:
