Range Cooker Cleaning: How to Keep Your Range Looking Like New

A range cooker is the centrepiece of your kitchen. Whether it's a Rangemaster, Falcon, Stoves or Britannia, these substantial cookers are built to last — but they're also magnets for grease, spills and baked-on carbon.

Keeping your range cooker clean isn't just about appearances. Regular cleaning extends its life, improves cooking performance, and keeps your kitchen smelling fresh.

The Challenge with Range Cookers

Range cookers have multiple cavities — usually a main oven, a tall fan oven, a grill and a storage compartment — plus a hob with burners or gas rings. That's a lot of surface area to keep clean, and grease has a habit of working its way into every gap.

Daily Maintenance Tips

  • Wipe spills immediately — while the surface is still warm (but not hot), wipe up any spills with a damp cloth.
  • Keep the hob clean — after each use, wipe down the hob to prevent grease build-up on burners and pan supports.
  • Use oven liners — place removable liners at the bottom of each oven to catch drips and make cleaning easier.

Weekly Cleaning Routine

  1. Remove and soak racks — take out all shelves, racks and trays and soak in warm soapy water.
  2. Wipe the interiors — use a damp microfibre cloth with mild detergent. For stubborn spots, a bicarbonate of soda paste works well.
  3. Clean the hob — remove pan supports and burners (if gas) and soak them. Wipe down the hob surface.
  4. Polish the doors — clean the glass doors with a glass cleaner or vinegar solution.
  5. Wipe the exterior — use a specialist cleaner for stainless steel or enamel surfaces.

What to Avoid

  • No caustic oven sprays on the enamel or stainless steel — they can discolour and damage the finish.
  • No abrasive scourers — they'll scratch the surfaces.
  • Don't put cold items on hot surfaces — thermal shock can crack glass and enamel.

When to Call a Professional

Even with regular maintenance, a range cooker benefits from a professional deep clean every 6–12 months. A professional service will:

  • Deep clean all cavities, including hard-to-reach areas
  • Soak and degrease all racks, shelves and trays in a dip tank
  • Clean and polish all hob burners and pan supports
  • Polish all glass doors and exterior surfaces
  • Check seals and door hinges
