Why Is My Oven Smoking? Causes and Solutions

A smoking oven isn't just annoying — it can ruin your food and set off alarms. Here are the most common causes and what to do about them.

Why Is My Oven Smoking? Causes and Solutions

You preheat your oven, and within minutes the kitchen is filled with smoke and the fire alarm is blaring. Sound familiar? A smoking oven is one of the most common — and frustrating — kitchen problems. The good news is that it's almost always fixable.

The Most Common Causes

1. Grease and Food Residue Build-Up

This is by far the most common cause. Over time, grease splatters and food spills accumulate on the oven floor, walls and door. When the oven heats up, these deposits burn and produce smoke.

The fix: A thorough deep clean. If the build-up is significant, a professional clean will remove baked-on carbon that home cleaning products can't shift.

2. Leftover Cleaning Product Residue

If you've recently used a chemical oven cleaner and didn't rinse thoroughly, the residue can smoke when heated. Always wipe out the oven with a clean, damp cloth several times after using any cleaning product.

3. Packaging or Plastic Left Inside

It sounds obvious, but it happens — a piece of plastic packaging or a stray oven bag left inside will melt and smoke. Check the interior carefully, especially in hard-to-see areas.

4. A Faulty Heating Element

If your oven is clean but still smoking, the heating element itself may be failing. A burning smell accompanied by visible sparking or a damaged element means it's time to call a repair technician.

5. New Oven "Burn-In"

New ovens often smoke on the first few uses as the factory coating burns off. This is normal and should stop after 2–3 uses. Run the oven empty at 200°C for 30 minutes to speed up the process.

How to Stop Your Oven Smoking

If the cause is grease build-up, here's what to do:

  1. Clean the oven thoroughly — remove racks and trays, and clean all interior surfaces.
  2. Clean the door glass — grease between the glass panes can also smoke.
  3. Check the seal — a damaged door seal lets heat escape unevenly, which can cause residue to burn faster.
  4. Run it empty — after cleaning, run the oven at 200°C for 15 minutes to burn off any remaining residue.
