5 Signs Your Washing Machine Needs a Deep Clean
Bad smells, grey clothes, and noisy cycles are all signs your washing machine needs a deep clean. Here's what to look for — and why it matters.

Your washing machine cleans your clothes — but what cleans your washing machine? If you've never deep-cleaned yours, you might be washing your clothes in bacteria, mould, and limescale. Here are the five signs it's overdue.
1. Your Washing Machine Smells Bad
This is the most common and obvious sign. A damp, musty, or sour smell coming from your washing machine means mould and bacteria have taken hold in the drum, door seal, or detergent drawer.
The rubber door seal is a particular hotspot — it traps water and creates the perfect breeding ground for black mould. If you can see black spots on the seal, it's already well established.
2. Your Clothes Smell Musty After Washing
If your clothes come out smelling less than fresh — or worse, slightly damp and musty — your washing machine is the culprit. Bacteria and mould inside the drum transfer to your laundry during the wash cycle.
Running a hot wash with a cleaning agent can help temporarily, but it won't address build-up in the filter, pipes, or behind the drum.
3. Grey or Dingy Clothes
Over time, detergent residue and limescale build up inside the drum and internal pipework. This residue coats your clothes during washing, leaving them looking dull and grey instead of bright and clean.
If your whites are coming out grey no matter how much detergent you use, it's a build-up problem — not a detergent problem.
4. Noisy or Vibrating Cycles
Limescale and debris in the drum and filter can cause:
- Louder than normal wash cycles
- Excessive vibration during the spin cycle
- Grinding or rattling sounds
These aren't just annoying — they're signs that your machine is working harder than it needs to, which can lead to premature wear and costly breakdowns.
5. Detergent Drawer Is Clogged or Mouldy
Pull out your detergent drawer and look inside. If you see:
- Black mould in the compartments
- Hard, crusty detergent build-up
- Water pooling in the drawer
...then the drawer and the internal pipework behind it need cleaning. This build-up restricts water flow and means your detergent isn't being distributed properly.
What Causes Washing Machine Build-Up?
- Low-temperature washes (30°C or below) don't kill bacteria or dissolve detergent fully
- Using too much detergent — excess doesn't rinse away, it builds up
- Liquid detergents — these leave more residue than powders
- Soft water areas still get limescale from other minerals
- Closed doors between washes — traps moisture inside
How to Prevent Build-Up
- Run a 90°C wash once a month with a machine cleaner
- Leave the door open between washes to let it dry
- Wipe the door seal after each wash
- Use the right amount of detergent — check the packet
- Clean the detergent drawer regularly
- Check and clean the filter every few months
When to Call a Professional
If your washing machine has any of the signs above and you've tried running hot cleans without success, a professional deep clean will:
- Remove built-up limescale from the drum, pipes, and heater element
- Clean the detergent drawer and internal dispensing system
- Clear the filter and drain pump
- Eliminate bacteria, mould, and odours at the source
- Improve wash performance and extend the machine's life
